E623 | Lessons From A Hawaiian Roadtrip
Jul 13, 2023Doc Danny delves into the topic of how to be happier while striving for more in this episode. He acknowledges that it's a tough challenge since people tend to focus on results, outcomes, and achievements, which may take longer than expected and cause frustration. During his recent trip to Hawaii with his family and two children, they drove on the famous Road to Hana in Maui.
This long and winding road gave them many opportunities to enjoy the rainforest, waterfalls, and other sights. Danny explains that the purpose of the drive isn't to get to Hana quickly but to enjoy the journey. Therefore, he advises people who aspire for more to be more self-aware and present to relish the journey and not just focus on the goal.
Danny then shares a personal story about his family stopping and enjoying banana bread during the journey. Additionally, his son, his son's friend, and a local kid they met climbed a coconut tree and opened it with a machete. Although he was behind schedule, he experienced an unexpected and special moment. He concludes by emphasizing that the journey is just as important as the goal.
Therefore, he advises being attentive and present to learn more about oneself and appreciate the journey more than the end result. It's a valuable lesson that we should all apply to achieve a happy and fulfilling life.

So here's the question. How do physical therapists like us who don't want to see 30 patients a day, who don't want to work home health and have real student loans, create a career and life for ourselves that we've always dreamed about? This is the question. And this podcast is the answer. My name is Danny Matei and welcome to the PT entrepreneur podcast.
What's going on doc Danny here with the PT entrepreneur podcast. And today. We're talking about the best way to be happier as you are striving for more, which is tough, right? Because for a lot of you listening to this podcast, you are trying to, you know, change your career, trying to. You're trying to, you know, make a career change or improvement of some sort, right?
So you are trying to develop and improve. And in some cases people would, you know, lump this under the term like personal development or, uh, self work, you know, you know, kind of, uh, Capacity to, to try to improve and change, but people like that, and I struggle with this people that are trying to improve, they are motivated typically by results, by outcomes, by achievements, by seeing change.
And sometimes when we're, when we're trying to make changes, uh, they can take longer than we want. And that can cause frustrations that can cause people to become impatient and, and frustrated. And especially when they start to look around and on social media, they see what all their colleagues are doing or their friends are doing, or, you know, whatever, like what their life looks like and their life isn't quite what they want it to look like yet.
And it can frustrate you. It can really make you upset and, and, uh, feel like you are doing something wrong. Like you're not making the amount of progress. That you should, and I want to sort of tie this in with a trip that I recently went on and give you an example of, uh, what, what you can do and how you can really help in terms of, you know, make, making sure that you're not a miserable person to be around.
So you get what you want, uh, because sometimes what you want, isn't it really turned out to be exactly what you thought it was going to be. And recently my family, uh, went on a trip to Hawaii and this is not, this is like a very special place for us because we. It's obviously amazing. It's like one of the most beautiful places in the world.
But my son was born out there. I spent three years in the military in, uh, you know, on the Island of Wahoo. We lived on the North shore of Oahu for three years. And, uh, we had a chance to bring our kids back there. And they're old enough to 11 and nine. They're old enough to do a lot of this cool stuff that, you know, we want to do there.
Like we took them surfing and snorkeling and we did cliff jumping and a bunch of hikes and all kinds of stuff that we just really enjoyed doing whenever we were there. But the last part of the trip, we went to the island of Maui and on Maui, there's a road called the road to Hana and the road to Hana is this like famous, uh, road trip.
People do in Hawaii and it may not sound like, you know, you're on an island. How far could you go? We're not really going that far, but it takes a long time and it takes a long time because it's very windy and there's all these one way bridges. Just look it up this place. It's a, it's a crazy drive. Uh, there's like 600 something turns as you drive from, uh, from the basically.
Paya or I think it's called Paya, uh, town, which is like in the North shore to Hana, which is on the North East shore, I believe it made my geography. Right. So anyway, it's a long drive and it's a lot of turns and there's all kinds of places to stop along the way. And what's interesting is like, I've talked to people that have done it and they're like, man, this is a, this is overrated Hana.
Is nothing special. And I'm like, yeah, I know it just ends in Hana, right? Like, like, I think people think that the, the drive is about getting to Hana, right? It's like when my family would do road trips, like it was, it was always, you know, okay, we're driving to, you know, Southern New Jersey where my, where my dad is, uh, is from.
And we're driving from Texas and it's like, how fast can we get there? You had the whole point was speed of getting there, right? Like no bathroom breaks, like, you know, suck it up, uh, and, and just get there as fast as we can. Like the point of it was to just get there. Well, I, I think for me, when we were driving, when we were driving this road to Hana, there's all these cool places you can stop and you can see just all kinds of sort of rain forest and it's really cool waterfalls and stuff that you just.
You know, you don't see on a daily basis. And if you, all you're doing is driving, we're trying to go as fast as you possibly can get there. You're missing the whole damn point of the drive, right? In this case, the drive is basically your self development, your journey, like your, your time with the people that matter the most to you.
And it's hard, I think sometimes for us to be self aware enough and, and present enough to really enjoy the. The journey to where we're trying to go, but that's really like the most fun part. You know, and if we take us back to Hana, I can tell you something that I wasn't expecting was like, my favorite part was we stopped in this little town and there was this little like banana bread shop that we'd been told to go to.
And it's the best damn banana bread ever had in my life. But what, what was cool was we got a chance to eat some great banana bread to go, you know, jump on these little rocks that were in the, uh, uh, in the water and, and take some cool pictures with the family and my son and, uh, his friend, they climb up, uh, basically a coconut tree with a kid that they met whose mom was selling coconuts, uh, at this park and they pull one down and then they, you know, they, they, They're a little friend that they met had like a machete and they like try to open it up.
And that's one of the more memorable things for my son, completely unexpected, right? Did it take us longer there than we probably should have stayed there? Yeah. Uh, so we were a little behind schedule with some of the things we want to do, but, but man, it was such a cool moment, unexpected moment. And it was something that was just a part of the.
You know, the process of getting where we're trying to go. So, you know, as, as you are, as you're trying to improve where you're at, as you're trying to make progress in your life and whatever capacity that is, I think it's so easy for us to put our heads down, like my family's road trips and say, all right, I'm not going to celebrate till I get there.
I'm not going to enjoy this until I get there. You know, it's just get there as fast as I possibly can. But when you get there, it's like getting to this town of Hana and realizing, Oh, it's just. It's a little town, you know, it's just, it's not as special as you think, you know, I, I used to have this, this really, you know, goal, this big goal of, of, uh, having a business that made a million dollars in a year, like a seven figure business.
This was a goal of mine for a long time, and I wanted to get there as fast as I could. And as soon as. As soon as it happened, like as soon as I, I crossed over the trailing 12 of what that would be, I can tell you, I had like momentary happiness and then it was right back to like, well, what's the next goal, you know, what's the next thing versus being aware of all the cool shit that I had to learn and stuff that I had to endure and people that I had a chance to meet and people that I had a chance to like help along the way.
And, and, uh, And be more present with that, you know, it, I look back and I feel like I wasted a lot of time by trying to get where I was going faster. Uh, so I see this a lot with very motivated, very driven people and it's cool cause I think it's a superpower for you, but it's also, it could be your kryptonite.
So, you know, keep in mind as you're trying to achieve these things, you're trying to get somewhere that it's not just about where you're trying to go. It's about paying attention to the things along the way and making sure that you're enjoying it. And, uh, uh, not, not looking at it as a nuisance and looking at more of anything as the best part of the entire journey.
So pay attention, you know, be present and you'll get there. Uh, and maybe you'll get there quickly. Maybe it'll be slow, but at least you'll learn a lot about yourself and pay attention to a lot of things that you really are going to treasure a lot more than whatever achieving that goal. And we'll end up being
