E719 | Proof That You're Incredibly Valuable
Jun 20, 2024In this episode of the PT Entrepreneur Podcast, Doc Danny, a physical therapist, delves into the often overlooked value that physical therapists can provide beyond just treating injuries. Drawing from personal experience with sleep deprivation and the sacrifices many entrepreneurs make to keep up with the demands of running a business, Doc Danny highlights the importance of prioritizing sleep and overall health.
Through a recent presentation to a business networking group on the topic of sleep, Doc Danny found that the information was not only well-received but also deeply impactful for those in attendance. This experience led Doc Danny to emphasize the role physical therapists can play as trusted advisors and coaches on all aspects of health and wellness, rather than just focusing on injury treatment.
Encouraging his fellow physical therapists to recognize and leverage their expertise, Doc Danny advocates for a "performance-based clinician" approach that combines injury treatment with comprehensive health guidance. By positioning themselves as valuable resources for long-term health goals, physical therapists can not only better serve their patients but also build sustainable and profitable businesses. Tune in to this episode to discover how physical therapists can expand their impact beyond the treatment room and empower individuals to prioritize their health and well-being.

Danny: And what would they pay you to help them resolve a chronic back injury that stopped them from being able to walk or exercise or be able to spend time with their friends on a golf course or be able to go on vacations with their family or pick their granddaughter up or whatever. What is that worth to people?
Hey, are you a physical therapist looking to leverage your skillset in a way that helps you create time and financial freedom for yourself and your family? If so, you're in the right spot. My name is Danny Matei and over the last 15 years, I've done pretty much everything you can in the profession. I've been a staff PT, I've been an active duty military officer, physical therapist.
I've started my own cash practice. I've sold that cash practice. And to date, my company physical therapy business has helped over a thousand clinicians start growing scale, their own cash practices. So if this sounds like something you want to do, listen up, cause I'm here to help you.
What's going on? Doc Danny here with a PT entrepreneur podcast. And today we're talking about. And just how valuable you are and the information that you know is to the people around you. So I bring this up because I'm a part of a business networking group and in a group that I'm in, I was asked to basically present on something that I felt we did really well in our business.
As I thought about it, I thought about What would benefit the group of people that, that I'm in this group with, and there's about six of us all kinds of different businesses. But as I thought about what I wanted to share, I was like, okay, do I share something on content, marketing, sales, leadership, finance, things that I feel like maybe, we've done well within the businesses that I own and.
Eventually I came to the conclusion that I needed to talk to everybody about sleep. This, and this really was not what they thought I was going to be talking about. But I actually, I did that call today and I sprung it on him that I was going to talk about sleep. So I had about 20 minutes to present on whatever topic it is that I wanted to, and I essentially told him, I say, listen, I think the thing that I can talk to you about, that's going to help your business the most, as well as your personal life is honestly just sleep.
And. Improving your sleep and why you might want to prioritize your sleep and all the things that are beneficial that come along with getting really good sleep. And what was interesting was I got a really good response from everybody that was in there. I call people individually reached out to me and just thanked me for sharing that information that they were really struggling with managing their business and family and they just had really been neglecting sleep, which I've been there too.
One of the reasons I. And passionate about presenting about this to entrepreneurs is I have really deprived myself of sleep for years just for work purposes. And especially when our kids were young, I would work. All day I'd get home. They'd be awake. I wouldn't want to miss that. So I would spend time with them, spend time with Ashley.
She would fall asleep and then I would work for a couple hours after that to catch up on the things that I had to do. And then I'd wake up early to go see, I would see patients at six o'clock in the morning every day. So I just massively deprive myself of sleep. Many of you might be doing the same thing, right?
And you can, you burn the candle at both ends for only a certain period of time. Everybody maybe is a little different than others, but at a certain point it's obviously terrible for you. And as I share this information and based on the feedback that I got, I've come to the conclusion that the most valuable thing that we can help people with is not necessarily just their injuries.
I feel like injuries Are the it's what gets him in the door, right? But the ability to help people with stress. sleep movement eating decent food, having some accountability around just understanding how to be a healthier person that there's so much value in that. And the average person does not know this information.
They definitely don't know what to do when they're hurt. I definitely don't know what to do if they're trying to make a positive health change. And this is where I see This performance based clinician, the sort of hybrid individual that understands the injury side, but also, can have conversations with people and those who will trust them about what to do on the health and wellness side of things.
And what a great compliment these two things are for your business as well. So you're able to help somebody, but then long term establish a relationship with them where you can really help them achieve goals that take a long time, that are hard to stick to and provide them with information that is synthesized down to what's important for them and accurate, which is very hard to do for basically anybody.
So being a trusted person is very valuable. And even in this group of people and everybody in this business group, it ranges from multiple seven to all the way up to one of the people in this group has their company does a little over a hundred million dollars in sales. So very, successful businesses.
And. Again, the most valuable thing that I think I can provide to them is frankly to helping them with some basic health and wellness things. And I get this every time that I travel. Anytime I go to a business conference or if I'm going to any of these networking group events local meetups.
As soon as somebody figures out that I'm a physical therapist, they call me. They're asking me about why their, sister's calf hurts or why their wrist hurts or why their wife's knee hurts or do that. Do I have a recommendation for this type of person in this area? It happens all the time and it what we, I think, forget is just how valuable our skill set is to other people.
And yet we completely undervalue it. Ourself. It's, and it's because we think everybody knows it. Everybody knows what to do if their knee hurts. Everybody knows what to do if they're trying to, get their a one C down. Everybody knows what to do if they're trying to improve sleep. Everybody knows what to do if they're trying to lose some weight or if they're trying to, recover from a knee replacement.
Like people don't freaking know that stuff. They don't know. Otherwise we wouldn't have a job. And I promise you the marketplace values you and what you do far more than you may value yourself. Because it's hard to quantify what we do. It's hard to say if you help somebody get off of, taking prescription medications and lose 50 pounds and be active again with their friends and family and Oh, also help them recover from a nasty back injury that was really stopping them from being able to be active.
Like what would that person exchange, monetarily? if they knew that they were going to get where you're able to help them. And what would they pay you to help them resolve a chronic back injury that stopped them from being able to walk or exercise or be able to spend time with their friends on a golf course, or be able to go on vacations with their family or pick their granddaughter up or whatever.
What is that worth to people? It is. An absolute steal that they get to pay you a small fraction of what that's actually worth To get the help that they need from somebody that they trust that they can work with directly You know one on one and they don't have to deal with the insurance bullshit that everybody has to deal with to try to figure out how to just get some help and The fact that you can help them with these more complex long term health problems is an absolute win for you and for You So I just want to share this with you because, today I had a chance to talk to a handful of very successful business people about sleep and it was very helpful for all of them.
And I'm thankful that I decided to talk about that over sales or whatever it is that, that I was, potentially gonna share with them. And, I encourage you to really think about the value that you bring people, not just on the injury side, but longterm with helping them, really by quarterbacking their health and wellness and being a consultant for the human body that they desperately need sifting through all the information that's out there, all the different opinions of what people should do and being their accountability partner and their coach and their physical therapist all rolled into one longterm to help them get the goal or achieve the goals that they Did they want with the people that they want to be around long term and don't undervalue yourself.
